The Marathon

Writing is a marathon, not a sprint.

Originally, the Smut Marathon was run by Alison Tyler, but for some years now there have been no editions of this ‘competition’. Four years ago Alison gave permission for a Dutch version of the Smut Marathon being started and just recently she has also given permission to re-start the Smut Marathon.

So here we are…

What is the Smut Marathon?

The Smut Marathon is a writing challenge that lasts for months, hence the reason we call it a marathon. When you start it, be ready to be engaged for close to a year. If you make it through to the final round, you will have had to send in ten assignments spread over 10-11 months.

Why should you participate?

Because it’s fun!

Seriously, despite it being a competition, the Smut Marathon is fun, but also very educational. By participating and having to write something for the assignments, it helps you to think and write out of the box, and in the process, you learn more about your own writing and abilities. Some of the assignments link in to specific writing elements such as dialogue or setting a scene. Writing for the assignments, but also reading what others have written and getting feedback all helps to improve your own writing. Even if you are an experienced writer, the assignments bring you back to basics and might just spark something new and exciting.

Where can you follow the Smut Marathon?

Right here, on this site.

When a voting round opens, all the stories written by the contestants are posted in one post and at the bottom you will find the voting survey, where readers can tick the three stories they liked the best. The day after the voting round has closed, the results will be posted here on the site too. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, be sure to subscribe to this site via email, at the of the sidebar.

When does it start?

The planning for 2018 has already been done.  The full planning will be posted on the site in the coming weeks, but for now we can reveal that entries open on 15 December 2017 and the first writing round starts on 28 January 2018.

Who can participate?

Anyone!

Seriously, anyone who writes erotic stories or want to write them can participate. Everyone is equal and everyone gets the same assignments. The fact that both inexperienced and experienced writers participate gives the marathon a unique mix of stories, where it’s definitely not a given thing that the experienced writers will automatically be better. We’ve seen it happen in the Dutch marathon that some inexperienced writers last a lot longer than the experienced. The Smut Marathon is a challenge, a learning experience… it’s huge fun!
