Jury Member: Brigit Delaney

Maybe you have noticed, and maybe you haven’t…

When I announced the results for the third round, I also mentioned this:

That said, I have an announcement to make. Due to personal circumstances, I had to do replace one of the judges. For the remainder of the Smut Marathon 2019 Brigit Delaney will replace Jaime Mortimer. I am forever grateful that Brigit has been able to step in within seconds. More to follow during the coming week.

Where I am not prepared to disclose the reasons for the replacement of Jaime Mortimer, I want to say that I never like to change anything mid-competition. When I start out, my planning is done, and I prefer that planning to be followed for us long as the specific marathon is running. Unfortunately, unexpected things can happen and then I have to take action. The action I took in this case was to ask Brigit Delaney if she could jump in as a jury member for the remainder of the 2019 edition of the marathon. She didn’t even hesitate. In a flash she said yes, and minutes later I had her points for the third voting round, and not even 15 minutes after that, her bio popped into my inbox.

Here she is…

Brigit DelaneyFirst off, in introducing myself, I must say that I am one of you. I was a contestant in the 2018 Marathon and made it through the 7th round. It was a grueling and very worthwhile endeavor, as I learned a lot about myself as a writer and how to write for a particular audience. I took this year off intentionally, because I wanted to look at the marathon from a different perspective. So, when Marie asked if I’d join in as one of the judges for this year, I was ecstatic! I already really enjoy reading the entries and take my voting and feedback seriously. I want every writer to improve and meet their highest potential, and I applaud every person who puts their foot (or pen) in the ring.

What I look for as a reader is an enticing hook, characters I care about, thoughtful imagery, and just enough of the story arc to hold the whole thing together as a cohesive piece. I shy away from “scenes” and gravitate toward conflict and and writing that hints at what has or will happen outside of its borders. Since this is a “smut” writing contest, the story should have an element of the erotic, of course, but that can be subtle or graphic, depending on a writer’s style.

I blog on the regular at brigitdelaney.com, mainly about sex and marriage, but I include a healthy dose of erotic fiction, as well. I’m an active member of the sex-blogging community, and I also host my own weekly meme called The Erotic Journal Challenge.

In my vanilla life, I’m a writing, literature, and history teacher, so I spend an inordinate amount of time giving feedback to young writers, talking about novels and poetry, and discussing world issues and government.

My spare time (when I’m not writing) is spent with my husband and son, watching movies, hanging out with our zoo (two dogs, four cats, and a lizard), drinking red wine or gin, and generally being as lazy as possible on the weekends, napping, camping, and enjoying time with friends.

You can find me (too often) on twitter @brigitwrites.
