2020 Jury Member: May More

Three weeks remain for writers to sign up for the Smut Marathon 2020, and we are already way over half of the number of writers who will be allowed to sign up for next year’s challenge. Last week we introduced the first judge, Cousin Pons, and it gives me great pleasure this week to welcome a finalist of the Smut Marathon 2018, May More.

I write under the pen name of May More and have my own blog Sex Matters. This is a magazine style site where I pen all types of fiction, explore personal issues and retell true-life sexual exploits, illustrated by creative and erotic images.

My first post was written in 2016, but I only published a few pieces that year. Taking a more disciplined approach in 2017, my output increased, although I only wrote non-fiction articles and true life sexy tales about my man and me. My first attempt at online fiction since childhood happened a mere month before I entered the 2018 Smut Marathon. That story – Sinners – was inspired by a Wicked Wednesday prompt.

My writing discipline improved enormously as a result of being part of the Smut Marathon. I found myself on a steep learning curve and was delighted to reach the final. So when Marie asked me to be a judge for the competition in 2020 I was naturally thrilled. I’d really like to encourage all newbie writers to sign up and have a go like I did. It is a lot of fun.

Over the last couple of years blogging and creating stories have pretty much taken over my life. Writing for Sex Matters and other places gives me such a buzz . To create a unique tale and build characters that are believable feels amazing. I also enjoy the outdoors, solitude, silence, sex, good food and wine!

As a judge I will be looking for tales that pull me in from the start by creating an intriguing plot that features strong characters. I like to know who people are and why they are in the scene. I’m not a huge fan of flowery prose, but I respect that it can work well in the right setting.

I’m interested in being treated as an intelligent reader. Let me see through the eyes of your characters and learn what they experience by how they behave, rather than an endless monologue of explanation. I am a very visual person and like to see a moving image of your story as it unfolds, dark or vibrant.

I will be looking for entries that risk a little. Be it an unusual plot line, or a character’s extraordinary personality traits.

What I am trying to say is, I do not only want to read about sex. There should be an erotic component in the piece but that should dovetail with the story line providing a reason for the sex.

Of course the first few rounds often have a very limited word count – I understand these can be the most challenging, so it will be important to make your entry stand out.

I will ignore stories that don’t follow the guidelines; maintaining discipline is part of the competition. But if the tale has enough quality, I will be willing to forgive the odd typo or grammar mistake. I know how hard these things can be.

I will finish by saying, however far you get in the smut marathon, you will not regret being part of the experience. You will learn loads, and not just about writing. And probably make a few new friends along the way. What could be better?
